About twelve years ago, when I started working in Florida, there was a guy at my job named Louie who didn't come to work one day because he had an auto accident.
I went into the office and asked for his phone number. I called him and asked if he needed a ride to work. He said that he already had a car to use.
The next day he thanked me for the offer and we started talking and we became friends.
Over the next year or so, I had met his family. (Louie had moved back home, so I met everyone at his parents house) His Mom Rosa, his Dad Tiki, His brother also named Luis (within the family, the two Luis' were known by their middle names), His sister named Eva and Eva's three boys, Josh, Edwin, and Elliot.
I remember the first cake I tried to decorate was for Luie.
I drew a unicorn on a cake. It was quite ugly. Now for most every birthday in the family, I make the cakes, except for mine. Susan usually makes that one (Luis' wife).
Luie got sick in 1991 so I spent a lot of time either at Louie's house or the hospital that year.
His family invited me over for every holiday that year and I went.
Louie passed away after Thanksgiving.
Christmas was a few weeks away and the family made sure to let me know that I was still expected for Christmas, that Louie's death did not change things. This is how I got my Puerto Rican family. I still spend most holidays there.
Christal and Samantha are Luis and Susan's children.
